About SCSL

The SOUTH CENTRAL SWIM LEAGUE (SCSL) is a community-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization with a mission on promoting the aquatic sports of swimming and water polo communities from and around the county of Los Angeles. This organization is comprised of several aquatics youth teams located in the Los Angeles area and surrounding communities. We promote amateur aquatic sports by encouraging the development of local aquatic skills, providing the opportunity for inter-club competition.

History

The SOUTH CENTRAL SWIM LEAGUE was founded in 1993 by swim coaches Rita Hernandez, Charles Reed, Federico Ricketts and Louis Pecot in order to raise the quality of swim competitions serving the athletes in the South-Central Los Angeles area while keeping it affordable for the participants. From the beginning, the SCSL has been administered by coaches and parents from the area who share the vision of independence and self-determination for the league and the community. The goal for the league was to bring the competitions in south-central Los Angeles up to standards of USA Swimming. The SCSL adopted computerization of swim competitions early on and trained parents to become computer operators. Some of these parents went on to become USA Swimming meet officials. In 1999 The SCSL purchased a Colorado Timing System 5 which was a game changer for the league. The league went on to have many great seasons renting pool time at Jesse Owens pool, South Gate pool, Echo Park pool, West Hollywood pool and other locations. It wasn’t until 2014, with the help of parents Juan Torres, Ramon Harper, and referee Andy Chen, the SCSL became an official USA Swimming league. This allowed the results from SCSL meets to be used to qualify for other USA meets including Junior Olympics. Since then, the league has branched out into the sport of Waterpolo. The South Central Water Polo league (SCWP) started as an experiment and lasted three seasons from 2015 to 2017.
